I'm feeling nostalgic. So maybe I should try to list down those computers I've used or owned. I miss my computers!
An apple ][ clone: BASIC, call 151, ProDOS copy II plus. In particular, a key feature of ProDOS vs. DOS 3.3 was directory support. Obviously i didn't know why would'd need directories on those ~160K floppy disks.
XT
386SX: It was SX because it was a partial 32bit chip. Probably 32bit cpu, but 16bit bus.
386DX-66: Something like this. I didn't really use those machines that much, because I was in a different city.
For a year or so I actually didn't own or have access any personal computer. It's hard to imagine that now.
cliff.mit.edu: My first linux. Also the first one with a name.
westlake.mit.edu
quickstation.mit.edu: The hostname is a play on those public quickstations.
a celeron 300 overclocked to 450
unstable - my first dual cpu
heaven - this was another thinkpad i used at grad school
a 17in powerbook
greece: actually a buffalo file server.
Some other machines I also miss:
Those SGI's in W20. now I'm working on a campus where those machines were designed.
I also like the underground cluster near Hayden.
I wonder if I can still login as 'root' to those machines these days.

my first linux
When chatting with H last week, I wondered where B is up to these days. He should have received his phd by now. So I googled him and found that he's become an assistant prof at NUS.
B installed the first ever linux distribution on my P133 dell during duing my freshman winter break. Redhat didn't even existed then. It was Slackware.
At that time, installing Linux was a non-trivial effort. I'm not sure whether SIPB supported it back then. I remember he had to do something with the fonts to start X.
I named that machine "cliff.mit.edu". I still remember its IP was something like 18.239.*.*. (We got the entire class B in a dorm. )
'cliff' had since accompanied me through all the years at college and grad schools. It had become a server after a few years, and at some point it had uptime more than a year.
The P133, 128MB (?), ~4GB HD hardware had to retire at some point. I also lost the hostname after i graduated. But the 'spirit' still lived on. I had since named my office machine 'cliff'.
I first met B when he went back to high school to talk about life at MIT. It was a 'dream', at that time.

where do you want to be?
Some coworker asked:
If you can choose to be anywhere in this world, where would you be?My instinct response was "Hong Kong". But there's an alternative:
A place in this universe with most advanced civilization, in both technology (so that I can visit back earth easily) and morality (so that they won't put me in their zoo).So I guess that question has an assumption that's physically impossible (unless you believe in wormhole or magic).

bias?
